Painting the sounds...
10/08/1999 · por Centro Educacional Leonardo da Vinci

In june/99 the 2nd year students from Centro Educacional Leonardo da Vinci, during the Art class, painted what were their feelings when they listened to a song.

The teachers Liza and Silvia played a soft and calm song ( Here, there and everywhere, by Beatles ), and the students were invited to express what they felt through painting a picture by using themes, components and colours from their own choice.

The feelings bloomed and the reactions changed a lot. Emotion came to the surface and some of them even cried while they were listening to the song

It´s interesting to notice how, different people used the same colour to express certain feelings and the ones with the same feeling chose different colours.

While the students were performing their works during an interview, it was shown the way each of them interpreted the song and how they transfered to the immagenery plan.

The work shows the importance of arts – in this case the drawings, the painting and the song – in the development and in the fantasy of the individuals.

- Daniel, what are you trying to show in this picture?
- A person... a solitary animal.
- And why did you think about person . . . in this solitary animal ?
- Because the song given to us was sad.
- Which colours did you use?
- I used red, blue and a little of black.

Bruno is painting a picture called: " Protection"
- Bruno, why did you imagine this drawing?
- Because this is my mother’s heart, and this is me, insided my mother’s heart.
- Why do you think your mom has anything to do with the blue colour ( he painted a blue heart )?
- Because she likes it !"
- Did the music, help you to paint the picture? How?
- It helped. Well, the music I heard was sad, so that expressed sadness.

- Lúcio, what does your picture mean ?
- I painted a beautiful landscape, I did calm lines because the song wasn’t agitated, but calm, that’s why I used calm lines and the landscape was formed.
- What’s your work’s name?
- "Nature"
- Are the colours you used light?
- No, not all of them.
- Give me an example of a strong colour, a colour you think is agressive !
- Yellow

- Kim, what does this painting you produced mean ?
- Well...it’s sadness.
- Are the weak colours more used in sadness ?
- Yes.
- What about the strong colours?
- Black, yellow, more associated to pleasure.
- What does the colour red remind you of?
- Joy, peace, love.
- So... doe each colour transmit you a different sensation?
- Yes.
- And so does each song?
- That’s it.
- With a calm song, you paint a . . .
- . . . calm picture.
- What if it was a rock, you would do . . .
- . . . A picture of rock.

- Vinícius, what does the picture you painted mean to you ?
- Someone crying.
- Why is she crying ?
- Because she’s sad.
- Why did you paint a sad picture?
- Because the teacher asked me to paint a happy or a sad one, according to the song.
- And why did you use these colours instead of using yellow, for example?
- Because the yellow colour is happier.
- What do the colours ( gray, brown, salmon ) you used mean to you?
- Sadness
- Is gray a sad colour?
- Yeah.
- Do you feel sad when you see "gray"?
- Yeah, I do.
- Was the song calm or agitated?
- Calm
- Who is this person you painted "crying"?
- Any one.

- Juliana, what are you doing?
- The teacher asked us to... We came here to paint a picture, she played a calm song and we painted, and I painted.
- What does that mean to you?
- I painted a lady on the window, watching the rain.
- What did you think of when you heard the song? Calmness or sadness?
- Calmness.
- What were the colours you used in your painting?
- I used yellow, red, blue, green ...
- Which colour do you think it’s calm?
- Black
- What does this colour mean to you?
- Anger.
- Do you think your painting is beautiful?
- Yes

- Caio, you painted a heart. What is written inside it?
- Talking about the song the teacher played for us, I painted a heart, and a boy in it singing a song.
- Why do you call your painting " Friendship"?
- Because that’s what I felt when I heard the song. That’s, "friendship", then I painted a heart that I consider "friendship".
- Who is this girl in your picture?
- That’s anyone. Just a child.
- And who is the boy singing inside the heart?
- That’s me.
- What about the colours?
- I think that only some of them mean friendship, not all of them.
