Becoming Autonomies in English Class
09/03/2009 · por Joanna Dow · Tags: Programa Bilíngue

First Graders in the bilingual program have been having a lot of fun these first four weeks of school. Using interactive songs, “Icky Sticky Bubble Gum” and “Hokey Pokey” they are reviewing the different parts of the body. They are exploring their school environment by being able to identify and say classroom items as well as basic commands.

They are also learning to express their basic needs, such as, “May I go to the bathroom, please?” and “I’m thirsty.” More recently, we’ve been discussing different emotions/states of being one might have while at school. For example, “I feel tired.” Through this process, the students build on their autonomy, and self-confidence, therefore, feeling more relaxed and comfortable trying to speak English.

In addition, together, the students and I created class rules. By being a part of this process, the students not only know their opinions and thoughts are valued and respected, but also the rules have a personal meaning for them and they are more likely to apply them.

In the weeks to come the First Graders will go into new themes: exploring Leonardo da Vinci as a painter, painting using only primary colors, Saint Patrick’s Day, and Easter.
