Understanding the Value of Children’s Literature

Research constantly finds that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways. It encourages and instills a love of books and it teaches values to children through the plot and themes within the stories. Reading illustrated picture books aloud is a good way to start this process with children. These books tell stories that a young child can understand. It is also a good way to develop a better teacher-child relationship. From this bonding, the child will be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well.



The English department of the Infantil bilingual program has an impressive collection of children’s literature. In Infantil IV I-1, the teacher lesson plan for the day often works neutrally with the type of story chosen to be read on that particular day. The children are also encouraged to look at books after completing activities while waiting for classmates to finish their work. These children can delve into a world of comedy, fantasy, or mystery. This gives each child a sense of freedom and accomplishment by choosing a book they really enjoy.



Recently I shared with the children one of my favorite books. “If You Give a Moose a Muffin”. This humorous book has to be one of the most imaginative ever written and illustrated! The book teaches values at several levels.

• First, the idea is simply to be a good host. You should try to please your guest, even if it is a moose!

• Second, there is an analogy to being an adult, helping a child.

• Third, how do you accomplish things? Some you buy and some you make.

• Fourth, the child and the moose make a terrible mess but they take responsibility to clean up after themselves.

The illustrations are wonderful in making the moose very human and humorous. The figures are vivid and clear, and filled with warm, rich colors. It is a great story that everyone loved!



The content of learning experiences for the children of Infantil IV I-1 takes shape through all the supportive structure of activities and opportunities for emergent learning offered by repeated phrases and themes. In February, fish was our topic. In March, we focused on penguins; learning songs, colors, counting, and art crafts. With Easter just around the corner, our next theme will include bunnies and chicks.
