Considering the immense interest children have for storybooks, infantil literature can be the gateway for self-awareness, awareness of others and the differences between these two. Self-concept is the mental picture we have developed about ourselves. Three, four, and five year olds are developing a sense of one’s self. Preschoolers are beginning to understand things about themselves that are unique. With the help of the adventurous Brazilian “Pingos,” and other exciting stories, the students of Infantil III are exploring the characteristics that make them and their friends special.

Throughout our 2009 first semester project, “All About Me,” Infantil III will be developing their social interactions as a way to better understand their own identity in order to differentiate themselves in relation to their peers. We are utilizing games and activities that incorporate our names, physical characteristics, our likes and dislikes, our emotions, our families, and of course, our friends. As we continue to expand our English vocabulary through the use of games, activities, songs, dances, art, and mathematics, we are learning not only a new language but also how to respect everyone’s differences while favoring the construction of self-identity and independence.
