An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
30/09/2009 · por Roxanne Thomas · Tags: Programa Bilíngue

The fun and fascination of teaching the children in Infantil IV I-1 seems never ending. In the last few weeks, we have been studying and learning about the legendary character Johnny Appleseed.

For forty-nine years, Johnny Appleseed roamed the American wilderness, devotedly planting apple trees. The seeds that he planted, and the saplings he gave away to the local Indians and the new settlers, helped to build the orchards of the Midwest of North America. Apples were very important to the early settlers. Easy to grow and store for year-round use, they were dried to eat during the winter, and made into butter and cider or used in baking cakes and pies.

From my observation, the children are captivated by these stories of folklore characters and can internalize the English vocabulary and the structure of the language while listening to them. One of the reasons why these stories work so well in the bilingual classroom has to do with natural motivation. Natural motivation is the theory that people are motivated by internal factors. With the folklore project fully underway each new character helps create a classroom that internally motivates the children to participate in the activities and, ultimately, learn the language that is being taught. Simply put this means that the kindergarten children are enthusiastic and motivated to participate fully.

The class has created 3D apple mobiles, completed different apple counting activities, played various games using apples and even ventured into the kitchen to make apple crumb cake. We enjoyed learning all about Johnny Appleseed’s life and the impact he made on the lives of the early settlers, and we wanted to share one of the famous sayings we learned from him.
