Building the concept of average speed

With the purpose of building the concept of average speed, an activity was performed, out of the traditional classroom, with the groups of 8th grade, under the supervision of their Physics teacher, João Duarte, aided by Prof. Rogério Abaurre.



Three robots (from the Robotics Workshop) were used for measurement and observations on speed and time. In a pre-determined path, the robots walked at different speeds, and the amount of time taken by each one was measured by the students.

Through the analysis of the several distances traveled and registered times, the students could establish the concept of average speed: Speed = Distance / Time.







After that, Prof. Rogério Abaurre drove his car in the tests area. The students made their observations and measurements on how long the car took to leave a ground mark and arrive at another mark, 12 m away.



With the aid of the automobile, the students got to establish the difference between average speed and instantaneous speed.



Logged the measures obtained in the chronometer after some movements, the students left for the classroom with practical concepts of average speed, time, space and other.



During the simulation, Prof. Rogério used the safety belt all the time, obeying safety principles and the new brazilian law for the traffic.
