“North America was a great big land
With a great, big job to be done
A job that needed a great, big man
Paul Bunyan was the one.
Hey, Paul
Paul Bunyan”
With our current Infantil IV project focusing on tales of folklore in both Brazilian and American culture, our children have been quickly learning the famous tales of Saci Perere, Curupira, Paul Bunyan, Johnny Apple Seed and Pecos Bill. These stories play an important part in understanding the historical aspects of both cultures, along with teaching children the important qualities of hard work, respect for nature and risk taking that many of these characters personify.
Through a combination of artistic collages, short theater productions, movies and written activities, our children are being immersed in the exciting world of story telling, helping them develop both an appreciation for culture along with sharpening their creative and cognitive skills.
Along with famous folklore stories from the United States, our children are being exposed to famous fables dating back all the way to the renaissance times in Europe. These fables and nursery rhymes are a great tool for developing language production along with being a fun means towards learning English. It is not an uncommon sight for children at Leonardo Da Vinci to be prancing along the halls chanting to the famous Humpty Dumpty song, or humming to the Itsy Bitsy Spider. As the week’s progress teachers will be continuously building infatil IV’s folklore and nursery rhyme vocabulary in order to continue developing both linguistic and cultural literacy.
