The bilingual program has always stressed the importance of not only introducing the English language to children through conversation, but has also emphasized distinct cultural holidays and customs that are unique contributions of each foreign teacher. In the spirit of a strong tradition in the United States, infantil IV will be immersed the next couple of weeks in the stories behind the Thanksgiving holiday. This holiday, which this year takes place on November 26th, is an important part of American culture, as the native Indian’s already in America graciously helped the very first settlers.
Through these stories we have been focusing on the importance of helping those who are different from ourselves, and how sharing can be a mutually beneficial quality. From reading books discussing the very first Thanksgiving between the Puritan settlers and native Indians, our children are able to gain a peek into not only the formation of the United States, but also how two very different cultures can interact in harmony. Through a combination of arts and crafts, written stories and coloring activities our children will have a chance to explore the significance of the American holiday while also working on their fine motor skills. As we make our way towards the end of the year, teachers of infantil IV have noticed a great development in our children’s abilities as both cutting and assembly of creative activities are only being done with a great amount of precision.
Ending the year with Thanksgiving has always been an important part of our culture in the United States as there are many things we can give thanks for this year. The importance of being grateful for these small victories will also be greatly emphasized to the kids as reflecting on their progress is an important step in developing autonomy and self- esteem. I want to personally thank all my kids in infantil 4, as this year has been a wonderful teaching experience.
