As I’ve spent some time reflecting on the first two weeks of the 2010 school year, what becomes so apparently clear for this observer is the undeniable success of the Infantil Bilingual Program at Centro Educacional Leonardo da Vinci. Frequently at the back of parents minds they ask themselves “Is my child really learning English?” and at times even the educators have doubts as well. To quell this fear, I recite an analogy from my mentor, a true genius in his field;
"Learning and improvement is like watching grass grow. When you look at it everyday you think it could not possibly be growing because it doesn’t seem to change from day to day. Yet as the weeks and months pass, behold - the grass needs to be mowed!”
Michael Poulin
Consequently, it is akin with the children in Infantil IV Bilingual Program.
Entering my third year as a teacher in Infantil IV, it is also a great privilege to be teaching at the 2nd grade level. From this vantage, one can truly measure the rate of growth since many of the 2nd grade students this year were with me in 2008.
The kindergarten level is where the courage to use English is promoted. This is the stage of exploration and accomplishment, where learning is exciting, challenging, and stimulating. Because accomplishments result in positive feedback, self-reward and esteem become progressively self-reinforcing. This is where productivity begins.
So rest assured parents and concerned educators, the program is in place and as in all things worth aspiring to; time is on our side.
