As a new teacher in Infantil, I am happy to be a part of the Leonardo da Vinci community. This year is off to an exciting start. My class has already jumped into an array of English projects. Most recently we are learning about colors. I chose to do an experiment with them using white flowers, food coloring and water. It is amazing how such simple ingredients can lead to profound experiences. Each child was able to chose one primary color, red, yellow, or blue.
Or, if they wanted, they could mix two of the primary colors to make orange, purple or green. The two main objectives of the experiment were to talk about colors, and what colors mix together to create other colors. Another objective of the project was to have the children begin to hypothesize about what was going to happen when we put our flowers into the water.
I was pleasantly surprised when I heard children calling out ideas about what was going to happen. As you can see from the photos, they were truly engaged in the activity and having fun with it. They were learning in a fun, relaxed environment. This was one of the reasons this experiment worked so well. Everybody was using their English to speak about the colors! What is exciting about being an English teacher is seeing your students grow and become independent with their language usage. It is so rewarding. I am excited to see where our English will be by the end of the year!
