Leonardo da Vinci was once again honored to have Dr. Outeiral come speak with us, as we explored many of the similar themes from last year. This time with a full crowd of parents and teachers alike, the talked ventured on a few new topics while reinforcing many of the previously laid out theories. Reminding us once again of the pressures adolescence and adulthood are having on childhood development was an important review. In his lecture, Dr. Outeiral touched on a few new items which we must be keenly aware of as parents: the symptoms of a tremendous change that is currently occurring in society. 

Dr. Outeiral made a bold statement at his lecture, pointing to the fact that our society is in the midst of a cultural fissure. This fissure is an earthquake of types, which is violently shaking the ground beneath us, forcing parents to examine the manner in which children are raised. A few of the symptoms of this change were explained to demonstrate certain values which have been replaced, in an attempt to recapture previous conceptions of society. 

The first of these symptoms is time. With the leaps and bounds we are making in technological advances, time is speeding up at a tremendous pace. The generation today is what he calls “Generation delivery” in which everything must be instant, with no delay. Patience is difficult to come by as the internet, transportation and other mediums are speeding up time in today’s world. 

Another symptom of the change he describes was the disposability of objects today. The infatuation with consumerism has taken a grip of not only children but also society as a whole. The notion that everything is disposable has detrimental effects on not only society, but also our physical world. This mentality is obvious in the manner in which objects are manufactured today, many of them not lasting very long. This disposability has translated into our relationships, causing us to view people as subjects or things and thus treating them much like the disposable objects we encounter everyday.  This symptom translates into the next, as the banality of life coincides greatly with the speeding up of time and disposability of objects in life.  

The existence of an ever-increasing banal life in the minds of our youth has generated a constant need for stimulation. This need is satisfied by ipod music, and the ever-increasing consumer mindset we unfortunately all play into which has equated happiness with objects instead of relationships. Without these items, the banality of life is brought into greater focus. This detachment from relationships and focus on objects emphasizes the need for consumerism, a topic to which Dr. Outeiral warned of in great detail during his last visit.

These items are just a brief overview of the dangerous changes that are occurring due to the earthquake that is taking place in society as a whole. With these changes come points of tension which should be closely observed in our children today. While Dr. Outeiral did not present any immediate answers to the trials of this time, he did point out our need to be aware of these ever changing societal fissures in order to be proactive in child rearing. Brushing off these symptoms will not make the problems go away, as we are living difficult times in terms of raising children.
