Once Upon a Time: Truths Within Fairytales

As the second semester projects continue to unfold, the Grade One English Class is learning of classic fairytales and of the magic within them. The Frog Prince and Snow White have been chosen as the two fairytales we will learn in greater detail.

As a teacher, my focus throughout the telling of these tales is to have the children get involved in a world of make believe through finger puppet plays, art projects and songs. It is exciting to watch the children bring a story to life through their own interpretations, and to hear them do so in English!



As the children get lost within fairytales, I also want to make them aware of, and understand the important lessons within the storyline.

Which each fairytale we read, I am encouraging the children to look at the relationships between the characters, and to look for valuable lessons within the storyline. In Pinocchio the children talked about Pinocchio’s long nose as a result of not telling the truth, in Beauty and the Beast; of being friendly to everyone even if they look different, and now as the children learn of The Frog Prince they are understanding the importance of keeping a promise.



Our project of fairytales provides ample opportunity for the children to use their imagination with characters they love and stories they enjoy, and to understand lessons which will help them throughout their childhood and long after.



It is a project that I hope will spark an interest in books and reading, as I believe stories help every child grow.
