Amplifying Skills in Diverse Applications

Every year there are many new concepts and skills to learn.  Successful teachers plan and orientate normal, everyday activities to secure these skills necessary for success in kindergarten.  There are many easy ways to engage the children and increase their understanding of the concepts being taught.  The bilingual program at CE Leonardo da Vinci utilizes the resources of a computer room for the children of Infantil IV.  Two very important abilities are being developed here; good-listening skills and pre-math skills.


Listening skills are extremely important for children who are beginning their education and entering as elementary school students.  Listening allows children to accumulate and understand information as well as develop their own language skills.  Children should learn that listening well requires paying full attention.  An easy way to strengthen this is by using audio books.  The infantil computer room has a newly added “listening corner” just for this purpose. 

This is a simple and fun way to teach listening skills.  The children, by following the story with a companion book, begin phonemic awareness (tracking sequentially from sound to sound) and relating the story in a logical sequence.


Rightfully as important as the listening skills, Infantil IV children are also developing pre-math skills during their activities in the computer lab.  Mathematics is crucial not only for success in school, but in having the ability to be problem solvers and think logically.  In the future, this attribute will serve well in the child’s chosen career and in personal fulfillment.

Learning is a series of building blocks.  Children start developing pre-math skills very young.  Toddlers routinely work on sorting and grouping as part of their play.  Following this is number recognition and learning shapes.  These activities help cement pre-math and pre-geometry skills and prepare for understanding addition and subtraction before they move on to multiplication and division in elementary school.  The most important aspect for teachers and parents to remember is to make math fun.

The infantil computer lab is an easy way to entice the children and increase their understanding of these concepts; mathematics and listening.  The quality of both the programs immensely helps with keeping the children’s full attention.  It makes teaching interactive, easy, and fun.
